Welcome to Maribor, Slovenia’s second-largest city, often sits quietly in the shadow of Ljubljana. But for travelers looking for Specialty Coffee, Maribor offers, albeit limited but diverse and flavourful scene.

Of course, while local wine is a highlight, it’s not the only drink worth your time. Between sightseeing stops, do slow down and grab a great cup of coffee.

The city’s compact center makes café-hopping easy. In this coffee city guide, we plot a course for you to follow so that you get the best brews in town.

Looking for pointers on the best places for coffee in Ljubljana? We have a guide for Slovene capital here.

ROOSTER COFFEE

Rooster Coffee has its coffees roasted on site and sold by Tovarna kave brand, which means every cup you get here is as fresh and aromatic as it should be.

You’ll find all the classics, such as espresso, cappuccino, and flat white, alongside a thoughtfully curated specialty menu. If you’re visiting, keep an eye out for seasonal drinks that showcase their creativity, and do ask what beans are available for espresso, as it is usually a choice between a daily-driver blend and something more refined.

It’s an ideal quick stop before heading out to explore the old town or the nearby riverfront. If you’re curious to dive deeper, we’ve also prepared a more detailed review of this spot.

PISARNA

Pisarna blends café culture with a practical twist of a co-working space.

Popular with students and digital nomads, it doubles as a study-friendly workspace where you can sip your coffee, focus on your laptop, or even print documents if needed.

But don’t let that fool you, it’s not just for students. Travelers are just as welcome to relax here with a strong double espresso, creamy latte, or refreshing iced coffee. It’s a laid-back place to recharge before your next stop in the city. On top of that, they sometimes host various events for patrons and newcomers of the cafe.

BREWPUB

Don’t let the name fool you, this place is not just a craft beer brewery, as coffee is also roasted and brewed here.

Brewpub has four distinct zones, one of which is located on the second floor and is perfect for enjoying a masterfully executed espresso. And if you are lucky, Christopher, who is a co-owner and coffee roaster, will be behind the bar. Ask him whatever about the place and coffee, and just kick back and enjoy the storytelling.

POLEK KAVARNA

Polek stands out in Maribor’s specialty coffee scene for going a step further than most.

Here, it’s not just about choosing between different beans, but also between different roasters, giving you a broader spectrum of flavors and styles in a single visit.

Whether you’re in the mood for a balanced, approachable espresso, smooth and silky decaf, or something more experimental, the rotating selection keeps things interesting for both newcomers and seasoned coffee enthusiasts.

Here is our tip for coffee lovers: ask whether Jessika is on shift, as she is a chef, barista, and roaster who supplies the shop with coffee. She will help you pick the perfect coffee for you and is always happy to quench your coffee curiosity.

One of the best things for travelers? All these coffee spots are located within walking distance in Maribor’s city center. You can easily visit them all in a single stroll.

And if you’re traveling with a furry companion, you’re in luck since these places are dog-friendly, so your pet can join the adventure too.
